Ground Floor

On the first level of the permanent exhibition there is a scene of a large national fair, where, only for this occasion, in one place, one can see gathered people from the whole Balkans.

The scene of a fair presents festive, ceremonious folk costumes. The exhibited costumes are from Šumadija, Pomoravlje, Beogradska and Bosanska Posavina, south eastern Serbia, Kosovo-Metohia, Skopska Crna Gora, Dalmatia, Herzegovina, Montenegro, Vojvodina, Slavonia etc.

All costumes are on dolls, arranged to represent large groups of people symbolically gathered for a big fair of Serbian Orthodox church. And the symbol of church is a model of a fountain from the monastery Dečani, which dominates the space and photographs of our major monasteries.
Displayed costumes are festive, representative and often dressed only several times in a man's life and they show prosperity of seemingly poor people as well as specific variety of human dispositions in different part of the Balkan peninsula. Looking at displayed attires, a visitor can "read" almost the whole traditional culture, and notice various ethnical, historical and political winds that have blown over the Balkans for centuries.

The scene of a large fair is complemented with pieces of different products, most often sold in fairs, and musical instruments, since singing and dancing were inseparable part of all fairs. There are also many photographs taken on fairs from the beginning of 20th centuries.
