XX International Festival
of Ethnological Film
October 17th – 22nd 2011

The International Festival of Ethnological Film in Belgrade marks a significant anniversary. It has endured for 20 years in spite of a turbulent socio-historical environment. At the time of its birth, in the ambience of the monastery of St. Prohor Pcinjski, the setting was tranquil and the audience was quite limited and experts in the field. Nowadays, the Festival is devoted mostly to young people and extends its scope to various issues, for instance intangible cultural heritage and the need to preserve its values for the next generation. The event simultaneously addresses diverse challenges and social and cultural problems of modern life and the place of human being within it.

In 2011 the selection committee chose films featuring not only the current state and description of cultural phenomena, but also films dealing with dynamics of human relationships,

The Festival features a competition program, an informational section and a variety of special programs. The selection committee prioritized film works in the informational section showcasing ethnographic cultural heritage, socio-cultural conflicts, human experience and its relationship to the environment.

This year’s program contributes two new topics. New information technologies change the concept of contemporary life. This issue is not only a filmatic theme, but also a tool for film production. Another new topic deals with the dissatisfaction with cultural codes and the consequent search for different models. These new topics draws us closer to a new genre if we take into account the number of films featured in these areas.

In addition to the regular competition and informational section, the Festival will bring forward additional programs: the review of the films awarded in the previous 20 festival editions, debates and panels, master-classes, presentation of the festival catalog and thematic events devoted to particular filmmakers and productions (for instance, the selection of recent Canadian and Iranian ethnographic documentaries). Among the prominent Festival guests, Ethnographic Museum in Belgrade will host professor David MacDougall, worldwide famous ethnographic filmmaker from Australia.

A total of 115 filmmakers applied for the event this year, 32 films thereof will compete for awards. The prizes include the Grand-Prix of the Festival, the awards for the best foreign and national film and finally the best student film.

The Festival will take place at the Ethnographic Museum in Belgrade, Yugoslav Film Library, Cultural Centre „Steamboat“ and the Department of Ethnology and Anthropology at the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade.

The Festival organizer is the Ethnographic Museum in Belgrade, which endeavors to bring to audience the latest world production of ethnographic movies.
