Urban Architecture

According to building techniques, lay out of space and decorative elements, urban architecture in Serbia in the course of 19th and 20th centuries is characterized by two types of urban houses: oriental Balkan and houses made under influence of western styles. 
Oriental-Balkan architecture, typical for the period of Turkish domination, existed throughout 19th century together with architecture influences of western styles which dominated during second half of 19th and at the beginning of 20th century.
Oriental-Balkan type is built in a bondručna construction, and had typical outlets: verandas, porches, and čardak - belvederes. Interior of these houses was also in oriental style with a lot of kilims covering the floors, walls and sećije settee; with dolap, musandra, and mangala - braziers.

After liberation from the Turkish rule, the life in Serbia slowly get Europeanised while towns and houses gradually started resembling those on the West. They acquired signs of artistic styles noticeable in material, construction, form and decoration of facades. As a consequence the interior changed, too. Following new needs and circumstances the houses were furnished in Biedermeier, Napoleon style and similar.
