Custom Items

Curator: Vesna Marjanović

God's beard

Koledo mask, Serbia
This collection, created at the founding of the Museum, encompasses items of diverse material, manufacture and application. The items are characteristic mainly of Serbian people and Orthodox Christian customs, although some of them are connected with rite practice of ethnic minorities living on the territory of Serbia. In terms of time they belong to second half of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century. They are typical for traditional rural and, in a smaller degree, urban culture. Recent acquisition of custom items into Museum collections comes mainly from rural population, and according to form they are part of traditional culture. Function of many items is already reduced to symbolic presentation of rite practice.
