This department, however, is not independent in its work since together with Documentation department and Department for conservation and restoration it makes precisely defined museological system for protection of ethnographic cultural goods. Experts of the Department for study of national culture are primarily in charge of supplying the fund of Ethnographic museum and its scientific treatment. They define the structure of the fund in accordance with which the acquisition of items is done. That means that they are in charge of identification and selection of ethnological cultural goods, following general commitment to form museum fund as a paradigm of real traditional culture. Their aim is to create time and space cross section of reality. Experts of the department perform ethnological and museological treatment of items, i.e. they professionally inventory it. In order to thoroughly protect cultural goods, the Department for study of national culture periodically undertakes fieldwork. The aim of these researches is not only collection of items existing in a real context, but also study of the context itself. Therefore, ethnologists and anthropologists perform researches of social and spiritual culture. Thanks to such an approach to work, the items belonging to the fund of Ethnographic Museum are not undefined fragments of material culture, but quality witnesses of reality. Experts of the Department for study of national culture presents results of their researches on occasional independent and joint exhibitions, in permanent Museum exhibition, as well as in numerous scientific works published in periodical publication Bulletin of Ethnographic Museum. Among activities of Ethnographic museum very important are occasional thematic and study exhibitions, which present in detail certain segments of museum fund, or the latest scientific achievements. Some of the Department curators maintain close professional relations with colleagues from other museums in the country and abroad. They often render professional assistance to smaller museum in Serbia; on the other hand, they share their experience with colleagues from abroad while taking part in international scientific gatherings. |
