is coming to Belgrade!

ICOM Costume Committee,
Belgrade 2011

Now it is Serbia’s turn to present its splendid costume collections and traditions for curators, conservators, educators, and textile and costume historians from all over the world! The ICOM Costume Committee’s annual meeting in 2011 will take place in Belgrade September 25-30, at the culmination of the “Month of Dress in Serbia”. For the first time, representatives from museums and collections everywhere will be gathering in Belgrade to learn more about Serbian dress and its history. The meeting’s theme is “In Between: European fashion between East and West”. We can expect thought-provoking and exciting lectures from the participants, who will present papers on comparable material from their own collections. It will be a unique opportunity to compare and admire costume and textile techniques from past centuries from many famous – as well as from lesser known – collections.

This meeting, arranged by M.A. Mirjana Menković of the Ethnographic Museum in Belgrade, is supported by the Ministry of Culture of Serbia, Secretariat of Culture of Belgrade City, Province Secretariat for Culture – Novi Sad, Faculty of Applied Arts at University of Arts in Belgrade, Assembly of the City of Belgrade, Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Fashion Studio CLICK, with sponsorship from the Tourist Organization of Serbia and Hotel Palas.

In addition to a full lecture program, participants will visit an amazing selection of museums including the Ethnographic Museum, National Museum’s Fresco Gallery, the Historical Museum of Serbia, Museum of Novi Sad, Museum of Yugoslav History, Museum of Vojvodina, Museum of Applied Arts, Countess Ljubica’s Residence, and Museum of Serbian Orthodox Church. As dress historians are just as intrigued with new costume as with old, there will also be a fashion walk to visit contemporary designers, and a fashion show.

Unique projects in conjunction with the meeting may include embroidery workshops, conservation projects, and model costume projects (for example: how do we illustrate the 1950s through dress? What’s the best way to teach costume history to children? Can the cut of a garment tell where it comes from?). The Costume meetings also provide time and space for inspiring, open discussions on every aspect of work with costume.

Special arrangements are being made to ensure that both students and museum colleagues in Serbia and neighbouring countries will have the opportunity to participate in the week’s activities, also if only for part of the program. Both the Committee and the coordinators are most eager to create opportunities for museum professionals to meet each other, and if presenting a lecture is too much, there is also the possibility of presenting a project, a special object, or research in the form of a poster. This is the chance to meet foreign specialists – the ones who have written your reference books!

Registration for the meeting and further details will be made available in January 2011 on the website of the Ethnographic Museum and at Costume Committee’s website: www.costume-committee.org. We look forward to seeing you and finding out more about Serbia’s special and distinctive dress history!
